It was reported Monday that Devonte Fields would be meeting with TCU officials, with the intimation being that the dismissed star defensive lineman could return to the football team.
A day later, that doesn’t appear to be the case at all.
Multiple media outlets were reporting — or, more to the point tweeting — that Fields will not be returning to the Horned Frogs. The school has yet to make a public declaration as to Fields’ status, although that could happen the next time Gary Patterson meets with the media.
July 22, Fields was involved in an alleged domestic incident with his ex-girlfriend. According to reports, Fields’ ex accused him of pointing a gun at her; threatening to “blast” her while pointing the gun at her; and punching her in the face with a closed fist.
That triggered Fields’ “separation” from the team.
Three days later, Fields surrendered on an arrest warrant but was not formally charged. A police investigation in to the incident is ongoing.
Earlier this month, Fields was named as the Big 12’s preseason Defensive Player of the Year. In 2012 he was the conference’s Freshman of the Year. His 2013 season was marred by a two-game suspension and, ultimately, a foot injury that limited him to three games.
In late January of this year, Fields claimed he was attacked, beaten and robbed by three male suspects, one of whom fired five shots from a handgun into the air. For whatever reason, Fields declined to press charges despite contacting police.
UPDATED 7:39 p.m. ET: In a statement, TCU said that “Devonte Fields continues to be separated from the University at this time.” The school also notes that students have the right to appeal their dismissal from the university, which the player is apparently doing.
