For those wondering just who will replace Johnny Football under center in College Station, your wait could -- could -- be close to coming to an end.
While Kevin Sumlin and his Texas A&M coaching staff have been very tight-lipped about just who, sophomore Kenny Hill or true freshman Kyle Allen, have the edge in the quarterback battle or even when a decision will be made, Mike Matthews says the end is nigh. Said the starting center after Tuesday’s practice, “We’re going to find out this week who is going to be the the starter.”
While Matthews, the younger brother of former A&M All-American and 2014 first-round NFL draft pick Jake Matthews, gave away the timeline -- it had been thought in early August a starter would be named by the middle of the month -- he wasn’t about to tip his hand as to who the favorite might be.
“For me, it doesn’t make a difference,” the player said. “I know both of those guys, they can both have big playmaking ability. They’re both competing and doing a really good job. In the past scrimmage they both played really well... but I know whoever starts I have full faith in them.”
For what it’s worth, Sumlin and the offensive coaches could make a decision this week and not release it to the public.
It’s believed that Hill holds a slight edge over Allen, although again it’s difficult to ascertain given how the head coach has held his quarterback cards so close to the vest. From the Dallas Morning News:
Hill showed flashes last season that lead some to believe he could, like Johnny Manziel two years ago, be successful and productive right out of the gate. Allen comes in with the high-profile pedigree, a five-star member of the Aggies’ 2014 recruiting class rated as the No. 1 pro-style quarterback in the country and the No. 7 player at any position.
The Aggies will open the 2014 season on the road in Columbia against South Carolina Aug. 28.
