Gamecocks lose starting guard to ‘severely’ sprained knee

South Carolina’s offensive line took what could be a rather significant blow to its offensive line Saturday.

During a scrimmage this morning, Mike Matulis (pictured, No. 76) went down with an injury to his left knee. He couldn’t make it off the field under his own power and had to be helped off.

Afterwards, head coach Steve Spurrier indicated that, at first blush, the injury looks rather significant, although the OBC is hoping further evaluation alleviates their fears.

“Mike Matulis sprained his knee fairly severely,” Spurrier said in quotes distributed by the team. “They’ll wait and check it out and let us know how severe that was. We’re hoping it’s not as severe as it appeared.”

An MRI will be performed to determine the extent of damage and a timeframe for what if any time the lineman may miss.

Matulis missed the entire 2013 season after suffering a shoulder injury during summer camp. He started five games in 2012, one year after being named a Freshman All-American.
