Suspension for Sun Devil DE was preceded by DUI

As is ofttimes the case, we now know the rest of the story.

What was previously known was the Demetrius Cherry was suspended for Arizona State’s win over Utah this past Saturday. The only reason given was a violation of team rules.

According to the Arizona Republic, however, the defensive end was arrested very early Friday morning and charged with driving under the influence. Following the traffic stop, Cherry blew a .087; the legal limit is .08.

Todd Graham was non-committal when asked about Cherry’s availability for this Saturday’s huge non-conference matchup with Notre Dame.

“A part of our program is accountability,” the head coach said. “Obviously he was pretty upset at not being able to play last week (vs. Utah), but he understands that you’ve got to meet our standards. We’ll see what happens.”

On ASU’s depth chart for the Notre Dame game, Cherry is listed as a co-starter with two other players at the “Tiger” position. He had started the previous two games prior to his suspension.
