Tuesday afternoon, Louisville announced the quarterback will miss the remainder of the 2014 season because of an unspecified injury to his left knee. Gardner sustained the injury in the win over Boston College this past weekend.
While the school didn’t specify the nature of the injury, it’s believed to be, once again, an ACL issue.
“It is really unfortunate and disappointing for Will because of how hard he has worked and how respected he is in the locker room,” head coach coach Bobby Petrino said in a statement. “Will will continue to be an integral part of our program moving forward because of his leadership he has displayed and the respect he has in the locker room.”
The sophomore Gardner will be replaced by freshman Reggie Bonnafon, beginning with the Nov. 22 game at Notre Dame. Bonnafon has started three games this season, with the 7-3 Cardinals going 2-1 in those contests.
After the bye this weekend, the UofL has just two regular season games remaining — the Irish and Kentucky.
