Spurrier denies he’s hired Muschamp

Earlier today, speculation coming out of Columbia was swirling that Steve Spurrier had hired, or was on the verge of hiring, Will Muschamp as his new defensive coordinator.

Just as quickly as the rumors had surfaced, the Ol’ Ball Coach quashed them.

No, I haven’t hired Will,” Spurrier told Josh Kendall of The State when asked about the speculation involving the former Florida head coach. “I haven’t really talked to anybody about additions (to staff).”

“Not really,” Spurrier added when he was asked if he had spoken to Muschamp about the opening.

It’s assumed that the Gamecocks will be in what’s at least a three-way battle for the prized coordinator’s defensive services. Earlier this week, there was a report that Muschamp already holds offers from Auburn and Texas A&M for their coordinator vacancies. Additionally, Florida State, and good friend Jimbo Fisher, could at some point join the chase for Muschamp as well.

A decision from Muschamp on those or any other opportunities is not expected for at least a week. The coach is currently on vacation out of the country and, Spurrier said, "[f]rom what I hear, Will is going to wait for everything to settle down.”
