Ohio State had already announced that it would wear a helmet decal to honor a fallen teammate. With gameday at hand, one Buckeye captain has taken it a step further.
As picked up on by the Cleveland Plain Dealer‘s Doug Lesmerises, the official OSU athletics Twitter account tweeted out a photo of the Buckeyes’ locker room as the team is preparing to face Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship game. The photo showed that Michael Bennett will be wearing a jersey with the No. 53 on it, which was Kosta Karageorge‘s uniform number; Bennett’s usual number is 63.
Karageorge’s body was found in a dumpster over the weekend, dead of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound after being missing for several days. Karageorge was in his first season as a walk-on defensive lineman after wrestling for the Buckeyes the previous four years.
Earlier in the week, Bennett expressed his admiration for Karageorge.
“I think the appreciation he had for where he was was unique,” the senior defensive tackle said. “I haven’t met a lot of people who go to football practice every day and are thankful for the grind.”
Karageorge was laid to rest earlier this week.
