Chryst informs Pitt players he’s set to talk to Wisconsin

One more day, and the awkwardness will come to an end.

Poised to take over as Wisconsin’s new head coach, Paul Chryst, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is reporting, informed his Pittsburgh players following practice Tuesday that he is flying to Madison today to meet with UW officials and discuss the job opening with them. The Tribune-Review writes that Chryst “did not say he has been offered the job, or would accept it,” but “also didn’t say he was staying at Pitt.”

State law is prohibiting UW from offering the job to anyone prior to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. At that time, though, it’s expected that Chryst will be offered the job and accept it.

Over the weekend, Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson acknowledged the mutual interest between UW and Chryst, a native of the state and former Badger coordinator. That said, Pederson is still making a run at keeping his coach, although that will likely prove to be a fruitless endeavor.

Late last week, it was reported that UW was zeroing in on Chryst as their prime target to replace Gary Andersen, who left to take the job at Oregon State. In addition to Chryst, UW has also reportedly shown interest in former Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano.

In Chryst’s three seasons at Pitt, the Panthers are 19-19
