Cyclones’ Devlyn Cousin suspended after domestic abuse charge

An incident this past weekend has left an Iowa State football player in some legal hot water. And on a forced sabbatical from his team for good measure.

According to the Ames Tribune, Devlyn Cousin was arrested after an argument with his girlfriend turned physical Friday night. The defensive lineman was ultimately charged with simple serious domestic assault and obstruction of emergency communication following his arrest by Ames Police Department officers.

The Des Moines Register published some of the details of what led to the charges:

Geoff Huff of the Ames Police Department said Cousin was charged with pushing to the ground a woman identified in the arrest report as his girlfriend while she called 911 at 8:50 p.m. Friday. According to the report, the two were arguing in a residence at 4130 Harris St. in Ames.

Huff said the 911 operator heard a woman crying and a man yelling in the background before the phone connection suddenly went dead. The woman was not able to speak directly to the operator, Huff said.

On his Twitter account, Cousin seemed to acknowledge something happened -- or was about to happen -- that night.

As a result of the arrest, the redshirt sophomore has been indefinitely suspended from the football program.

“We are aware of the charges filed against Devlyn and we take them very seriously,” head coach Paul Rhoads said in a statement. “The allegations brought against Devlyn are not consistent with the expectations of our program. Devlyn is currently suspended indefinitely under the Iowa State student-athlete discipline policy as we gather more information.”

As the Cyclones aren’t bowl-eligible, the suspension won’t cost Cousin any playing time for the 2014 season. Whether that will be the case when the 2015 season rolls around remains to be seen.

This past season, Cousin played in nine of ISU’s 12 games. He started the first two games of the year, which marked the first starts of his career. In 2013, he saw action in seven contests.
