Neutral site games are all the rage with college football schedules these days. With the money that can be made, this is not going to change anytime too soon. Florida State, already in line for a nice payday for a 2016 contest in Orlando against Ole Miss, wants to pick up a few more neutral site arrangements in the coming years. The Seminoles also want a piece of Alabama and Auburn.
Florida State has long been rumored to a potential 2017 game against the Crimson Tide, with the new Atlanta Falcons stadium expected to serve as the host venue for the early season game. Those pieces appear to be coming together by the day, and it may not be too much longer before that anticipated match-up can become official. But because schedules tend to be generated years in advance, Florida State is also reportedly working on arranging another neutral site game against Alabama’s Iron Bowl rival, Auburn.
Per Bud Elliott of Tomahawk Nation, Florida State and Auburn getting a game scheduled may be less likely to happen but the talk is focused on a potential 2019 meeting in Jacksonville. The Jaguars have shown interest in luring some attractive college football games to its city as stadium renovations could make for a more desirable environment for a college football game between programs of Florida State’s and Auburn’s stature.
Scheduling rumors are often not advised to pay too close attention to, but the Florida State-Alabama talk has been around for a while, and Alabama routinely participates in a neutral site game, especially in Atlanta. Florida State played in Arlington, Texas to open the 2014 season against Oklahoma State and is now showing signs of wanting to participate in these types of contests more frequently.
Florida State last played Auburn in the 2014 BCS National Championship Game, the last of its kind. The Seminoles, of course, won that one in dramatic fashion. The last time Florida State played Alabama was in 2007, with the Seminoles victorious over the Tide in Nick Saban‘s first season as head coach in Tuscaloosa.
These match-ups are going to be fun to watch, if they do come together of course, but it would be much more attractive to see these games played in a college football stadium. But that’s just me.
