Helmet stickers returning to Michigan’s football helmet

When Jim Harbaugh was a quarterback at Michigan being barked at by Bo Schembechler, he did so with a handful of helmet stickers on the back of Michigan’s iconic helmet. Now that Harbaugh is the man in charge of the Wolverines, helmet stickers are reportedly coming back.

A report by Chris Balas of Rivals says Michigan will bring back helmet stickers in 2015 and do away with the special Legends jerseys in 2015. When Michigan last wore helmet stickers on their winged helmets the sticker depicted a wolverine. Will that be making a return, or might the block “M” be used instead? No word on whether uniform numbers will also appear on the helmets this season, although it would start to look really cluttered if they did alongside the helmet stickers.

The Legends Jerseys were regular uniforms worn by team leaders with a special patch on the left chest of the jersey with the name of a former Michigan legend on it. It was an interesting spin, but the patches were so annoyingly big that it just looked silly. The idea was ushered in under Brady Hoke, although no new names were added to the recognized jersey line-up last fall. Now the idea can simply be left to retire for good.

Unfortunately, there is no sign Michigan will completely step away from uniform atrocities such as THIS or THIS. I think this look was actually pretty well done, although Michigan really should be wearing maize pants to contrast the blue home jersey.

This one is up for public debate. On one hand, I am thrilled Michigan is doing away with the legends jersey concept. On the other, it just feels cluttered to be putting stickers on Michigan’s winged helmets.
