Ex-Indiana QB sits atop Wyoming’s depth chart

Wyoming has one quarterback on its roster who’s thrown a pass at the FBS level. Not so surprisingly, that same player currently sits atop the depth chart.

Two days after the first scrimmage of the spring, per a school release, Cameron Coffman is listed as the Cowboys’ starting quarterback. JUCO transfer Josh Allen, for now, listed as Coffman’s backup. Redshirt freshman Nick Smith and redshirt sophomore Aaron Young follow Coffman and Allen on the depth chart.

“I thought we had a good start to this week, coming off a scrimmage,” said Bohl. “We’re really pleased with our quarterback position. Our numbers weren’t great in our first scrimmage, but Cam has some really good presence, and you’ll see that in the Spring Game.

“Josh has one of the liver arms that I have been around. He’s got to continue to learn how to manage our offense, but he has come around fairly well.”

Despite his current positioning, Coffman is taking nothing for granted.

Nothing is set in stone,” Coffman said according to wyosports.net. “If I go out there and don’t do well, or slack off, someone could pass me. I don’t put any stock (in the depth chart). I have to go out and get better every single day.”

Coffman announced in January of last year that he would be transferring from Indiana. Four months later, he landed at Wyoming. Because of NCAA transfer rules, Coffman was forced to sit out the 2014 season.

As a senior, Coffman will be using his final season of eligibility in 2015.

In 2012 with the Hoosiers, Coffman threw for 2,734 yards, the second-highest total for a Big Ten quarterback that season. It was also the fourth-highest total in the program’s history. He appeared in just three games and attempted nine passes in 2013, which triggered his decision to transfer from IU.
