Jameis Winston becomes fourth player to hit Heisman, national title, No. 1 pick trifecta

Earlier today we speculated that Jameis Winston would become the first ACC player to garner a No. 1 draft pick since Mario Williams’ top overall selection by the Houston Texans back in 2006.

With Winston now officially a Tampa Bay Buccaneer, we can now say he has made another, more exclusive, piece of history.

With av Heisma Trophy and national championship from the 2013 season - making him one of only 14 people to accomplish both - Winston became just the fourth player in college football history to claim the game’s top individual honor, lead his team to the mountaintop and be deemed by the NFL as the top of his class. Just the second player in the last 65 years to meet the honor, Winston joins Auburn’s Cam Newton and Notre Dame stalwarts of yesteryear Leon Hart and Angelo Bertelli.

List of No. 1 NFL Draft Picks to Win a Heisman Trophy and National Championship
2015 - Jameis Winston, Florida State/Tampa Bay Buccaneers
2011 - Cam Newton, Auburn/Carolina Panthers
1950 - Leon Hart, Notre Dame/Detroit Lions
1945 - Angelo Bertelli, Notre Dame/Boston Yanks

With Winston now officially in the NFL, the race is on between he and Newton to become the first Heisman winner to quarterback his teams to collegiate and professional titles.
