In a conference with 14 members, consolidating everything in a football media day into one day of press conferences can be tiresome. Well, at least for the media covering it, but who cares about those people anyway, right? Well, those who will flock to Chicago this summer to cover the Big Ten’s media day event will be given some time to breathe a little, because the conference will expand its midsummer event to a second day of press conferences.
The Big Ten has held its media day event over the span of two days in the past, with coaches and players meeting with the media on the first day and then allowing for a more casual style and luncheon the second day. Now, as reported by Adam Rittenberg of ESPN.com, via Twitter, the Big Ten will feature half of its members on the first day and the other half on the second day. This is a long overdue and worthwhile change of plans for the conference.
In a way, this model takes a page from the SEC playbook by allowing for more exposure to members of its conference without drowning itself in the process. The SEC media day event has expanded to four days and sits alone on the media day schedule, which allows for plenty of media attention. The Big Ten shares media days on the calendar with the Pac-12, but perhaps the time difference can help prevent overlapping stories between conferences. Providing more coverage on the Big Ten Network will be critical. This has been an area of concern in the past by some Big Ten fans, but the pressure to improve the way it covers offseason football events may be there.
Now, as long as commissioner Jim Delany can pick up the pace with his state of the conference speech and we can get another round of this Big Ten hit, we’ll be set to go this year.
