Former TCU linebacker Jason Phillips has returned as graduate assistant

Sometimes it is good to come home. Jason Phillips is making his way back to TCU to be a part of the football program he previously played for before moving on to the NFL. Phillips took to Twitter last week (I know, we’re a little late on this one) to announce he has rejoined the football program, announcing he will serve on Gary Patterson‘s staff as a defensive graduate assistant.

While playing for Patterson from 2004 through 20087, Phillips put together a solid profile that includes All-Mountain West Conference honors. He was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2009 NFL Draft and spent time with the Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles during his six-year career in the National Football League. He was released by Chip Kelly and the Eagles prior to the start of the 2014 season, thus bringing an end to his playing days. But there is always coaching, and he seems to be ready to embrace a new role in the football world.

Having played in Patterson’s defensive system before, Phillips should fit in quite easily even though much has changed since Phillips last took the field with TCU. TCU is now in the Big 12 and coming off a blowout win in a New Years Six Bowl game. The Horned Frogs are pegged by many as a Big 12 favorite after splitting the conference championship with Baylor last season, and many expect TCU to be a playoff contender once again. The expectations are high in Fort Worth, but Phillips played a part in helping to raise the bar over time. His knowledge of the work being done at TCU should pay off as he gets to work with the defensive players at TCU this summer.

After 6 years in the NFL I’m honored and proud to be back home at TCU!! #FrogFam #MyFirstTweet
