Report: Dantonio says RB Delton Williams is eligible to play

The return of Michigan State running back Delton Williams appears to be in the hands of the running back. According to a one report, Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio says the running back will be eligible to play for the Spartans in the season opener next week.

Hondo Carpenter of Spartan Nation reports the information from Dantonio came from a recorded interview that is scheduled to air on the radio Thursday night. Asked whether Williams would be eligible, Dantonio reportedly replied with an emphatic “Yes.”

From here, it will now be up to Williams to prove he belongs on the football field for the Big Ten and College Football Playoff contender. Dantonio claimed university regulations have prevented Williams from returning to the team sooner. Dantonio said earlier this summer he expected Williams back for fall camp.

Williams was suspended by the program in March following a traffic incident with a firearm charge. He was left off the spring roster, seemingly putting his future with the program in jeopardy.
