Report: SEC Championship Game staying in Atlanta through 2026

The SEC Championship Game has become a staple on the community calendar in Atlanta, and that shows no signs of changing in the next decade. The Atlanta Falcons and the SEC will reportedly announce a 10-year extension on the contract to host the SEC Championship Game in the football home of the NFL franchise, which would keep the top conference championship game in Atlanta through 2026.

The game will be played in the brand new, state-of-the-art football stadium being constructed for the Falcons, beginning in 2017. Keeping the game in Atlanta is perfect for the SEC, as the city has become a top destination for the SEC since relocating the conference title game in 1994. All but the first two SEC Championship Games have been played in Atlanta, with the first two being played at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama.

Atlanta has been known to be a hotbed for college football for years, and the SEC Championship Game has helped make that the case in more recent years. The College Football Hall of Fame also recently relocated to Atlanta, and the season-opening kickoff games sponsored by Chick-fil-A have been a major draw and innovator of the early-season neutral site trend.
