It’s been the entertaining – and lengthy – shootout we thought it would be in Lubbock as No. 3 TCU leads Texas Tech 33-28 at the half. In a half that saw the lead change hands multiple times, TCU scored last, a five-yard strike from Trevone Boykin to Josh Doctson, with 15 seconds before the break to take the midpoint lead.
Texas Tech had taken the lead three minutes earlier as Patrick Mahomes walked in – literally – on a fourth down keeper from four yards out.
Mahomes has completed 12-of-23 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown to go with three carries for 20 yards. DeAndre Washington, who entered Saturday as the Big 12’s leading rusher, carried 11 times for 107 yards and two touchdowns in the half. Devin Lauderdale and Jakeem Grant have combined for six grabs for 129 yards and a score.
But nothing has matched TCU’s Boykin-to-Doctson combination, as the 6-4 pass catcher has snared 11 grabs for 184 yards and three touchdowns through just two quarters. Boykin has connected on 20-of-30 throws for 332 yards and those three scores while running for another 21 yards.
The teams combined for 715 yards of total offense and seven yards per snap.
TCU will receive to open the second half.
