Southern wide receiver Devon Gales, who was taken by ambulance to an Athens-area hospital after suffering a spinal injury during the Jaguars’ 45-6 loss to Georgia Saturday, was moved to an Atlanta hospital for rehabilitation, Georgia announced Wednesday.
“He was admitted to Shepherd Center’s Spinal Cord Injury Unit for evaluation, care and observation. On Thursday he will begin a rigorous rehabilitation program under the guidance of a full team of medical and rehabilitation specialists,” the school said in an official statement.
There was no word on how long Gales may have to remain in Atlanta.
Head coach Mark Richt and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer visited Gales Sunday and encouraged Bulldogs fans to support he and the Gales family (UGA paid for Gales’ parents to travel from Louisiana to Georgia Saturday evening), but the family requested privacy at this time.
“Mr. Gales and his family are appreciative for the outpouring of support from the Southern University and University of Georgia communities and others, but have requested privacy at this time,” Georgia said.
