Miami has ridden a golden carpet ever since fielding that kickoff at Duke. That ride is now over. No. 23 North Carolina is dominating Miami 31-0 through one half in Chapel Hill.
The game was scoreless through most of the first quarter until Cayson Collins recovered a Miami fumble at the ‘Canes 36-yard line, and Marquise Williams danced in for a 10-yard touchdown run three plays later.
The Heels scored on their next three possessions, getting a one-yard Elijah Hood touchdown run, a 25-yard Nick Weiler field goal and, after a 60-yard Jeff Schoettmer interception return, a 14-yard Williams scoring jaunt to push the lead to 24-0.
Ryan Switzer returned a punt 78 yards for a touchdown with just 40 seconds remaining in the first half, edging the lead to 31-0.
Williams completed 7-of-12 passes for 42 yards while leading all rushers with nine carries for 84 yards and two scores.
Good as the offense and special teams were, the Heels’ defense was even better. They limited Brad Kaaya to 182 yards and an interception on 22 attempts while also forcing a fumble on a sack just before the half. As a team, Miami has rushed 18 times for only seven yards with a lost fumble.
