For the first time in nearly three decades, San Diego State can claim sole ownership of a league title.
Tied at 10-all in the first half, West division champion SDSU outscored Mountain champ Air Force 17-14 over the final two quarters to stake its claim to the MWC championship trophy. The win marked the Aztecs’ first conference championship since 2012, and its first outright championship since winning the WAC in 1986.
The Aztecs went on a roll late in the season after three straight losses in Weeks 2-4, winning nine straight games to close it out. The last eight games of the regular season were conference wins, and all came by 10 or more points.
The lead in this one, though, changed hands on four different occasions, and it was tied four other times in what was the dictionary definition of a back-and-forth affair that had the misfortune of being scheduled to be played around the same time as the ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 championship. Memo to those in charge at the MWC: I heard Thursday or Friday nights are lovely nights on which to contest conference championship games.
SDSU utilized a balanced attack against the ground-heavy Falcons, throwing for 203 yards — on just nine completions — and rushing for 233. The service academy gained 305 yards rushing and just 35 on 11 pass attempts.
Freshman quarterback Christian Chapman was named the game’s offensive MVP, while teammate defensive back Na’im McGee claimed defensive honors .
