Cornuskers, Sooners add another future home-and-home

The two teams haven’t played since one left the Big 12 a half-decade ago, but at least Nebraska and Oklahoma are looking to keep some semblance of their rivalry intact, right Texas? Right Texas A&M?

Back in 2012, it was announced that the Cornhuskers and Sooners will be renewing their rivalry in a home-and-home series scheduled for 2021 and 2022. Four years later, another home-and-home between the iconic football programs has been agreed upon.

The new two-game series will begin with a game in Norman on Sept. 15, 2029, with the Sooners set to return to Lincoln on Sept. 14, 2030. As it stands now, the two schools haven’t met on the gridiron since 2010.

“We are pleased to finalize agreements with two outstanding programs for future non-conference contests,” Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst said in a statement. “We are committed to playing an outstanding schedule each year that brings value to both our student-athletes and the greatest fans in college football.

“The Nebraska-Oklahoma matchup is truly one of the legendary rivalries in the history of college football, and to now have four scheduled meetings in a decade will be great for both programs. The Arizona series will be another outstanding home-and-home matchup against a high-caliber Power Five opponent and will provide a road game destination that will appeal to Nebraska fans.”

OU currently leads the series 40-36-2 and holds a 23-16 edge in Norman. The two teams last met in the Big 12 championship game following the 2010 regular season, a 23-20 win for the Sooners.

In addition to OU, NU also announced a future home-and-home with Arizona. That series begins with a game at Memorial Stadium on Sept. 16, 2028, with the Huskers making the return trip to Tucson to face the Wildcats on Sept. 13, 2031.

By the time the first game is played, it’ll be the first time the two have played during the regular season in nearly 70 years -- a 14-14 tie in Lincoln on Sept. 30, 1961. The two teams have also met twice in the Holiday Bowl -- a 1998 win for the Wildcats and a 2009 win for the Cornhuskers.
