NCAA extends contract of president Mark Emmert three years

For those looking for collegiate sports to rid itself of the public face of what many consider a corrupt and exploitative organization, don’t hold your breath.

In a unanimous vote, the NCAA Board of Governors agreed earlier this month to extend the contract of president Mark Emmert another three years. Emmert is now signed through October of 2020. There’s also an option to extend the contract an additional year through the same month in 2021.

The financial particulars of the new contract were not released, although Emmert’s salary moving forward should be well north of $1 million annually.

“Mark has done an incredible job leading the Association through an unprecedented period of change and transformation,” Kansas State president Kirk Schulz, chair of the Board of Governors, said in a statement. “I and the board feel strongly that Mark is integral in leading the Association forward as we navigate the complex and challenging way ahead, while better supporting student-athletes.”

Emmert has been president of the NCAA since October of 2010.
