Va. Tech makes addition of WVU assistant Brian Mitchell official

Following up on rumors and speculation and reports that have been ongoing for nearly a month, Justin Fuente has officially made an addition to his first Virginia Tech coaching staff.

In a press release, Tech confirmed that Brian Mitchell has been hired to serve as Fuente’s cornerbacks coach. Mitchell will replace Torrian Gray, who left for a job at Florida shortly after National Signing Day.

With Mitchell’s addition, Fuente’s Hokies staff is, once again, complete.

“Brian will be a great fit with Coach [Bud] Foster and the rest of our coaching staff on the field and on the recruiting trail,” Fuente said in a statement. “He brings a wealth of experience to this role at Virginia Tech, as both a coach and a player. We’re excited to have our coaching staff finalized as we continue our preparations for spring football.”

Mitchell had spent the previous three seasons in the same position at West Virginia. Prior to that, he was the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at East Carolina. Mitchell, who played his college football at BYU, has also coached corners at his alma mater (1995-2005) and Texas Tech (2006-09).

In addition to the, ummm, addition of Mitchell, Fuente also announced the responsibilities for the other three members of his defensive staff:

  • Foster – associate head coach/defensive coordinator/linebackers
  • Galen Scott – assistant head coach/safeties
  • Charley Wiles – defensive line
