The starting LG exiting spring, Ryan Rentfro no longer at North Texas

Like North Carolina before them, North Texas has seen the interior of its offensive line take a hit three weeks before the start of summer camp, albeit for an entirely different reason.

According to the Denton Chronicle, a UNT official confirmed that Ryan Rentfro has elected to leave the Mean Green football program. No reason was given for the lineman’s abrupt and wholly unexpected departure.

It’s unclear if Rentfro has decided to give up football or will transfer to another football program.

Exiting the spring, the 6-4, 314-pound Rentfro was listed as the starter at left guard on the Mean Green’s depth chart.

The past two seasons, Rentfro, who would’ve been a fifth-year senior in 2016, played in a total of 14 games. He played eight games last season, mainly at left tackle.

Rentfro’s main claim to fame during his time in Denton, though, may have been a Twitter rant in September of last year, in which the lineman, following an 0-3 start, blasted UNT “fans” tearing down th program.

While Rentfro subsequently deleted the tweet, its missive has been saved for posterity:

It’s absolutely pathetic how people who call themselves UNT ‘fans’ cheer their hearts out during the good times and the moment one thing goes south or one player messes up they jump ship and say absolutely horrible things about the player or coach.

“Why tear them down? … We work ourselves ’til our bodies are literally falling apart, 12 months out of the year for 12 guaranteed games. When something happens we feel bad enough ourselves.
