Texas DB says QB Jerrod Heard ‘coming along great’... as a receiver

It appears the cat is all but officially out of the bag.

Speculation has been growing of late that Texas would be moving Jerrod Heard from quarterback to wide receiver. While there had been no official confirmation of the position switch from the program itself, one of its seniors, safety Kevin Vaccaro, spoke after practice Wednesday on how Heard’s progressing in his move to receiver.

Tyrone Swoopes began the 2015 season as the Longhorns’ starter, but was replaced after one game by Heard. The then-redshirt freshman proceeded to start the next 10 games, throwing five touchdowns and five interceptions as UT went 4-6 during his time as the starter. Swoopes then started the season finale against Baylor.

Prior to a shoulder injury that cost him the remainder of spring practice, Heard had been involved in a quarterback competition that included redshirt freshmen Kai Locksley and Matthew Merrick and true freshman Shane Buechele. The latter is currently the favorite to open the 2016 season under center for the Longhorns against Notre Dame.
