Damariay Drew won’t play for Cal in 2016; college career officially over

Damariay Drew‘s time at the collegiate level has officially come to an end.

Drew sustained a torn ACL earlier this year, but there was some semblance of hope that he would be able to return at some point this season. Those flickering hopes were officially extinguished Wednesday as Cal head coach Sonny Dykes confirmed that the fifth-year starting safety won’t play in 2016.

As he’s not eligible for a sixth season, that means the curtain has fallen on his college career.

Drew started 11 games in 2015 and three in 2013. In between, he played the 2014 season at a junior college after he was charged in May of that year with battery with serious bodily injury and inflicting great bodily injury in the commission of a felony following an incident involving a former Cal student.

In July of 2015, Drew was readmitted to the university. Despite missing a pair of games because of injuries, Drew finished third on the Golden Bears in tackles after his return with 71.

With Drew gone, Khari Vanderbilt will start in his place. Evan Rambo will head into the season as the other starter at safety.
