QB Malik Henry indefinitely suspended by Florida State

If Deondre Francois stumbles or is injured in Florida State’s opener against Ole Miss, the Seminoles may have to go deep into their depth chart for a replacement.

Saturday morning, Jimbo Fisher revealed that Malik Henry has been indefinitely suspended from his football program. Other than the standard unspecified violations of team rules, no specific reason was given by the head coach.

No timeline for rescinding the suspension was given either, meaning Henry’s status for the opener is very much up in the air.

Henry was a four-star 2016 recruit rated as the No. 4 pro-style quarterback in the country. He enrolled early and participated in spring practice, impressing the coaching staff enough that he was mentioned by some observers as a potential starter as a true freshman.

Francois had been engaged in a two-man competition for the starting job with Sean Maguire, with the former winning the job by default as the latter suffered a foot injury a week ago that will keep him out for a month. With Maguire’s injury, Henry moved into the backup role to Francois; with Henry’s suspension, the backup duties would fall to J.J. Cosentino. The only other quarterback on the roster who might be available for the opener is walk-on Jake Rizzo.
