In mix for starting job, USU’s Jarom Ioane suffers season-ending injury

Jarom Ioane earned a scholarship to play football last summer after beginning his career at Utah State as a walk-on, and then put himself into contention for significant playing time this fall.

Unfortunately for the redshirt junior, he’ll have to wait until 2017 to make more of an impact for the Aggies.

Following a scrimmage Saturday, head coach Matt Wells confirmed that Ioane suffered a significant lower-leg injury during practice earlier in the week. As a result, the offensive lineman will miss the entire 2016 season.

“He was right in the mix for a starting job, so I feel bad for that kid,” the coach said.

Ioane played in 13 games last season for the Aggies. Entering summer camp, he was projected as the starter at right guard.

If he so chooses, Ioane could petition the NCAA for an additional season of eligibility that could be used in 2018.
