Big 12 reprimands Texas LB for Baylor trash talk

Texas linebacker Steve Edmond let his feelings about Baylor be known following the Texas spring game last weekend. The Big 12 did not take too kindly to that freedom of expression and issued a public reprimand Friday.

According to a release by the Big 12, the comments made by Edmond were a violation of Big 12 sportsmanship and ethical conduct principles, but there will be no suspension issued.

“Mr. Edmond violated the Conference rule that prohibit coaches, student-athletes, athletic department staff and university personnel from making negative public comments about other member institutions,” said Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby. “Consistent with our standard for such violations he is being issued a public reprimand.”

Edmond went on record saying Baylor was trash in the midst of a rant about the defending Big 12 champions. He later apologized for his comments through a statement of apology.

“I need to apologize for what I said about the Baylor program last week,” Edmond said in the statement. “I respect them for everything they’ve accomplished. I’ve been so frustrated over not being able to play in last year’s game and our loss to them that I let all that anger build up and get the best of me. I won’t let that happen again.”

These two schools will be able to settle the trash talk on the field on October 4 in Austin.
