Record number of underclassmen enter NFL draft

We’ve been keeping track of underclassmen who have declared for this year’s NFL draft. This morning, the NFL released its list of 73 underclassmen who have been granted “special eligibility” for the draft by being at least three years removed from high school before declaring.

That number is a new record, breaking the one held in 2012 with 65 underclassmen declaring. In 2011, 56 players left early and 53 took off in 2010. In fact, the 73 who declared this year is 30 more than in 2004.

Of the 73 players, 33 come from SEC schools, or began their careers at SEC schools. That’s far and away the most of any conference. LSU has 11 underclassmen with ties to the program represented.

You can view the NFL’s release HEREbut here’s the alphabetized list.

Cal corner Steve Williams dives into draft pool

For the second time this afternoon, a Pac-12 defensive back has made a somewhat surprising decision regarding his football future.

Cal announced Tuesday afternoon that cornerback Steve Williams intends to forego his senior season at Cal and enter the 2013 NFL Draft.  Williams joins Stanford’s Terrence Brown, who announced a short time ago he was making the same move as well.

“I want to thank the University of California and all of the terrific people I met during my four years there,” Williams said.  “I had a tremendous experience at Cal and was given a wealth of opportunities both in football and in life. This was a difficult decision to make, but my family and I felt it was in our best interest and that this is the right time to take advantage of another set of opportunities we feel will be presented to us in the NFL.”

The past three years, Williams played in all 37 games and started 28 of those contests.  His 25 career pass breakups rank sixth in school history.

Williams is the second Cal player to announce his intentions to enter the 2013 NFL Draft with eligibility remaining.  Wide receiver Keenan Allen made the same announcement on Dec. 5, 2012.

2012-13 Underclassmen Draft Declarations Tracker

In an effort to keep all of the underclassmen declarations in one handy, easy-to-find location, we’ve created this page and will update it as the official word comes down that a player is leaving collegiate eligibility on the table and making the early leap to the NFL. The deadline for draft-eligible players to officially file their paperwork with the NFL is January 15.

Last year, a record 65 draft-eligible underclassmen left school early.  That shattered the record of 56 set the previous season.

So, without further ado, on to the tracker…

Assault charge led to Pitt player’s dismissal

And now we know the rest of the story.

Monday, Pittsburgh confirmed that defensive back Steve Williams had been dismissed from the football program for violating unspecified team rules.  According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Williams was arrested Saturday following an incident that involved assaulting a woman who may or may not have been his girlfriend.

An unidentified woman claiming to be Williams’ girlfriend alleged that the player had assaulted her at his apartment.  The Post-Gazette wrote that “[a]ccording to criminal complaint University of Pittsburgh police filed, the woman had marks on the right side of her chest and was holding strands of her hair.”

Williams denied that the alleged victim was his girlfriend.  He was charged with one count of simple assault.

After redshirting as a true freshman last season, Williams had not played in any games in 2012.

One Pitt player dismissed, two others transferring

The coaching carousel is not the only thing spinning now the the 2012 regular season has all but come to an end.

Pittsburgh confirmed Monday morning that a trio of players — defensive back Steve Williams, linebacker Jason Frimpong and defensive back Roderick Ryles — are no longer a part of the football program.

Williams was dismissed from the team by head coach Paul Chryst for violating unspecified team rules, while Frimpong and Ryles asked for and were granted a release from their scholarships.  Both those players will be transferring to unknown destinations.

None of the three played in a game in 2012 after redshirting as true freshman last year.  As the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review notes, a total of eight members of Todd Graham’s one and only recruiting class at Pitt have either been dismissed or transferred since February of 2011.

Ryles was easily the most touted of the three coming in, a three-star prospect rated as the No. 35 safety in the country.  Williams and Frimpong were both two-star players.
