Stoops-to-Irish rumors won’t stop

Bob Stoops issued his strongest denial yet of any interest in the Notre Dame vacancy earlier today, telling reporters that he is “going to be at Oklahoma next year.”

Less than a few hours after that denial, however, yet another log has been tossed on the rumor mill fire.

According to an on-air report by ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, he spoke today to several NFL sources, “some with connections to the Notre Dame program, [and] there is a feeling that there is strong interest in Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, and that the interest is mutual, despite a contract at Oklahoma that runs through 2015.”

“One NFL source,” Schefter’s report continued, “goes so far as to say he believes an agreement is all but a formality, with some details, likely including the Oklahoma contract, still to be resolved.”

So, just as we thought we were done with the Stoops-to-Irish rumors, we get pulled right back in.

And, it’s safe to assume that, regardless of how many denials Stoops issues, the wave of innuendo and speculation regarding the Sooners coach will not go away until a new coach is named.

Or until Stoops pulls a Saban and is himself named as Charlie Weis’ successor.
