Time Travel: The recruiting of Herschel Walker

As we have hit what’s called a lull -- or a crater-like rut, if you will -- in the college football news cycle, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution takes a walk down memory lane in the form of a video from Signing Day 1980 of The Greatest. College. Football Player. Ever.

Of course, we are speaking of the legendary Herschel Walker, the former Georgia running back who also doubled as the apple of a high-profile coach’s eye back in the day.

Aside from the hairdo’s of the seventies bleeding over into the early eighties, the most striking image in the video is Walker tooling around town in a Pontiac Trans Am. And everyone taking it at face value that his father paid for it, not some unscrupulous booster.

These days, the outrage generated by the top recruit in the nation driving around in a (insert really expensive car brand here) would literally cause the Internet to cave in on top of itself. Then? Not so much.

Oh, and famed UGA head coach Vince Dooley specifically speaking about Walker before he had signed with a school. Today, the NCAA has the authority to publicly hang a coach who dare utters a recruit’s name.

Anyway, here’s a little blast from the past to tide you all over until some real news -- like urinating on inanimate objects -- hits the proverbial fan.
