Ol’ Ball Coach stirring the expansion pot

If you ask Steve Spurrier a question or for his opinion, more times than not you’re going to get what’s on his mind whether it ruffles some feathers or not.

Hell, he doesn’t even have to be asked sometimes. Back in May of 2009, Spurrier appeared on Paul Finebaum‘s radio show and, without any prompting, brought up a seemingly dead rumor about Urban Meyer bolting Florida for Notre Dame.

Today, Spurrier held court in front of the rumor mill and wasn’t shy about pushing a button or two on the machine and churning out some speculation he’s heard. Or simply his opinion to use as grist to feed said rumor mill.

His main targets this afternoon? Arkansas and Notre Dame.

As to the former, the Ol’ Ball Coach apparently caught wind of rumors that the Razorbacks may somehow be involved in the “conference expansion apocalypse” and felt obliged/obligated/more-than-delighted to share them with the media masses.

“I don’t know if we’ll do a larger (SEC). I haven’t heard that scenario. I’ve heard maybe Arkansas back to the Big 12 or something like that,” Spurrier said according to the Northwest Arkansas Times.

(That sound you heard? Spurrier going up to the 800-pound gorilla in the room and punching it square in the face.)

Of course, Spurrier wasn’t done. Next on the agenda was the Irish, although, in all honesty, it was “just” a rehash of the coach’s past thoughts.

“I’ve said all along Notre Dame should be in the Big Ten and they should have to play the same schedule everybody else up there plays,” Spurrier said. “I think it’d be good for them, good for college football. I don’t think Notre Dame wants to do that. They like being independent, but I think they should get in that Big Ten and go play.”

Of course, what Spurrier has to say or thinks about expansion means about as much as it would coming from you or I.

Still, it’s good to see the Ol’ Ball Coach maintaining the ability to tweak with the best of ‘em. Now, about that Gamecocks football program...
