Buffs WR Simas eyeing a San Diego homecoming

Three weeks after being stripped of his scholarship -- and with only a sliver of a chance of playing another down for Colorado -- Markques Simas has his eyes on a return home.

According to the Boulder Daily Camera, the talented but troubled wide receiver is considering a transfer from Colorado to San Diego State. There are no firm plans as of yet for Simas to land in his hometown, but he talks as if the Aztecs would be the optimal spot for him to continue his collegiate football career.

I am leaving Colorado,” Simas said. “San Diego State would be a good fit for me, but it’s too early for me to say anything. I have to see if they’re interested in me. I’m enrolled in summer school here, so I don’t have a timeline yet. I have school and some legal issues to clear up before I come back.”

The legal “clear up” stems from Simas’ February drunk driving charge, which ultimately led to head coach Dan Hawkins pulling his scholarship earlier this month. The DUI was the latest in a string of incidents both off the field and in the classroom; he missed the 2008 season due to academics, then was suspended for the first two games of the 2009 season for violating team rules.

Simas seemed to blame the surroundings for the issues he had during his time in Boulder.

“I kind of regret leaving San Diego,” Simas said. “I’ve had my time here (Colorado), but if I came home to San Diego State, I’d have family support and other people that support me. That’s something I was missing here.”

Yeah, that was it.
