Ex-Duck Masoli passes on NFL for another shot at college ball

In addition to rumors that he’s been eyeballing at least a couple of possibilities at the collegiate level, there have been reports that former Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli would likely make himself available for the NFL’s supplemental draft later this month.

Apparently, the latter is not going to happen.  And, given Masoli’s rap sheet, it’ll take a program whose head coach has a big pair for the former to happen.

Tyson Alger of the Oregonian is reporting this evening that Masoli will not be a part of the pool of players who have made themselves available for the July 15 NFL draft.  An NFL spokesman told the paper that Masoli did not file the necessary paperwork by July 5 to be included in the mid-summer NFL draft.

Instead, it appears that Masoli will take the collegiate route, and likely at a rung lower than the Div. 1-A level he previously played at with such talent that, before his twin run-ins with the law this offseason, had the QB situated for a run at the Heisman in 2010.  If Masoli decides to stay in Div. 1-A, he would have to sit out a season unless granted a waiver by the NCAA.

There was a report last week that Masoli had already visited the Louisiana Tech campus, and that he has an interest in, among other schools, Mississippi State.

Other than those schools — provided they are even realistic possibilities — Masoli may have an impossible row to hoe and could find himself in Div. 1-AA — or lower — before making himself available for the 2011 draft.

So if it’s a FBS school, he’ll be looking for a program that doesn’t have a young, talented guy who’ll probably be entrenched as a starter going into 2011.
    No Stanford, I presume.

Hopefully wherever he ends up he can play against Cam Newton in a classic battle of laptop-stealing scrambling QBs.

Does anyone really believe that the NCAA will give Masoli a waiver for one year so that be can stay at the Div 1 level. He is going to end up at some small school that has not had much of a winning program and wants to win. Outside of that this should end his career.

    Ohio State?

He’s heading to the local community college to team up with Boozie. Most prolific combination since Montana-Rice.

Considering he doesn’t nearly have the talent for the NFL, this makes perfect sense.

Wrathchild — perfect observation. He is a great QB for the college spread game, but does not translate into an NFL QB. Makes all the sense in the world to stay and play as long as you can. Only other job he is getting is in the CFL.

He should probably look to the division III or local community schools now… good luck with that!!! Sorry, but I’m guessing he has pretty much used up any chance a school will extend him a scholarship

TJ – sorry, we’ve already dealt with our drunken robber thug era with Machine Gun Mo Clarret… not to mention we’re fairly good at the QB position for the next 5 or so years.

Some division I school thats needs a spread QB will offer him a scholarship. See Cam Newton at Auburn. He did the same thing as Masoli, and is now the starting QB at Auburn. I would’nt be shocked to see him at Miss St. next year.
