‘Canes WR Collier reportedly out at The U

Less than 72 hours before they open summer camp, Miami appears to have tossed aside a spark to their 2009 special teams unit and an experienced piece to their 2010 receiving rotation.

Citing a source familiar with the situation, the Palm Beach Post is reporting that wide receiver Thearon Collier is not expected to play for the Hurricanes this season. Collier and head coach Randy Shannon reportedly met Monday morning, presumably to discuss the future -- or, apparently, the lack thereof -- the receiver has at the school.

With rumors floating around the Internet that Collier was having academic issues, the Post reports that it is “a series of off-the-field issues” that have apparently ended the junior’s career with the Hurricanes. What those alleged off-field issues are was not reported.

Collier returned two punts for touchdowns last season -- the first player at Miami to accomplish that feat since Devin Hester in 2004 -- and it appears he will finish his Miami career with 45 receptions for 574 yards and three touchdowns.

Collier’s departure is the second veteran loss the Hurricanes have experienced in less than a week; on Sunday, it was reported that defensive end Steven Wesley had been dismissed from the program.
