It’s bad enough to lose your opener, at home no less, by putting a paltry three points on the scoreboard. It’s even worse when the team that gets over on you plays at the Div. 1-AA level.
What level of embarrassment would it be, then, if the opposing coach came out a couple days after the fact and rubbed your nose in the mess you left on your home turf? That’s the very unfortunate situation* Kansas and head coach Turner Gill finds themselves in right now.
(*But still kinda darkly comical in a “wow, did you see that train derailment?” type of way.)
Still riding high from the 6-3 win over the Jayhawks, North Dakota State head coach Craig Bohl was asked about his team’s upcoming game against fellow 1-AA school Northern Iowa. In praising his next opponent, Bohl takes a shot at both Kansas’ “docile” fans and the Jayhawks’ toughness — or lack thereof.
“I think the environment that we’re going to play in Cedar Falls is going to be much more of a hostile environment than Memorial Stadium in Kansas. That was pretty docile,” Bohl said. “And the type of team that we’re going to be playing is going to be a much more physical, aggressive football team than KU. And quite frankly I think we’re going to be playing a better opponent. I know one school is in the Big 12 and the other one is in the Missouri Valley. I think that gives an indication on how we see Missouri Valley play and the respect we give Northern Iowa.”
Ouch. That’s just… well… mean.
Suffice to say, the Turner Gill Era in Lawrence has not gotten off to the expected start. Even worse, though, Bohl’s words may very well further cement the notion amongst a portion of Jayhawk Nation that Gill could indeed be in over his head at this point in his coaching career.
Especially the ones that didn’t want Mark Mangino gone in the first place.

Northern Iowa is no pushover. They were the top team in Iowa a couple recent years (via wins against the winner of Iowa/Iowa St)
Ah yes, because the all knowing Bohly (not msp) responsible for Nebraska defenses that danced around, got beat on the line of scrimage, and were gashed right up the gut over and over. Very physical indeed.
I have been impressed by what Bohly has accomplished at ND State up until now. Maybe its time to quit hiding Bohly and find a team to coach in a real conference. Maybe you should schedule Nebraska, I am sure you would have a warm welcome back there, and I bet it would work out well for you.
Considering Bohl coached at Nebraska and Gill is a former Husker it is kind of surprising that Bohl made that comment. But then, his team played well against a higher profile Div 1 team and deserves some PR time.
Heck… I forgot that Bohl played for the Huskers in the late 70′s too, a few years before Gill was the QB. Probably just some banter…
Kansas – other than their men’s hoops team – is a mess right now. Football team is terrible, and could well go 0-fer. Their AD just quit. Their conference is on the verge of falling apart. Yeah, THAT’S where I want to go to school.
Craig Bohl was “let go” as Nebraska’s Defensive Coordinator. He was an assistant for Nebraska, with Turner Gill for years.
Just saying, doubt he means any disrespect to Turner, probably just a nice jab at Kansas and their unreasonable expectations.
Fix your title on the main page. ” CFT: NDSU coach rubs Iowa’s nose in it after loss” is not only misleading, but entirely wrong! MSNBC.com editor = FAIL!
“Even worse, though, Bohl’s words may very well further cement the notion amongst a portion of Jayhawk Nation that Gill could indeed be in over his head at this point in his coaching career.”
After one game? People need to relax and give coaches time to build a program. It’s not as if Mangino left him much to work with.
Meh, Bohl really likes Coach Gill so he’s not rubbing his nose in anything. On one hand, Bohl is simply managing expectations – beating a BCS team guarantees nothing about the next game. On the other hand, if he believes what he says, you may not like it, but it doesn’t make it any less true. KU’s atmosphere was not intimidating – UNI plays in a smallish dome and it will be much louder there. KU, while they tackle extremely well (heck, I think they tackle better than any other team I’ve seen in the last twenty years), are not overly physical on defense. KU, on offense, looked like they were used to more finesse than smash mouth and could not run between the hashes. UNI is different.
@ToTaLCHaoS
…I’m not sure there is anything misleading about the title…seems to me he was fairly clear in saying that not only did they beat Kansas…but that they are less scary then the team they are getting ready to face…who is a division lower. I’d say that’s a fairly strong example of rubbing ones nose into something…eh?
That’s definitely what he said but it was not Bohl’s intent though. UNI might be a division lower but they are a scary team (last year: #22 Iowa 17, UNI 16 – and Iowa had to block two last second field goals to win that.) Plus, NDSU hasn’t beat them in, well, forever.
That just…well…awesome!
