Boom(er) or bust: Oklahoma goes down

Is it just me, or are we seeing 2007 all over again?

For the third straight week, the No. 1 team in the land - this time the BCS version - has gone down on the road. Two weeks ago, it was Alabama who lost at South Carolina and last week Ohio State fell to Wisconsin. This time, it was Oklahoma coming up short at the hands of No. 18 Missouri. The Sooners were ranked atop this season’s first BCS poll.

In a dimly lit cellar somewhere in Boise, Idaho, Chris Peterson is drawing a line through another previously undefeated team.

As we conclude week eight, it would appear Oregon and Auburn are likely to be No. 1 and 2 (in no particular order) tomorrow. Boise, with a bye week, is still likely No. 3. With the level at which Oregon and Auburn are playing, though, it’s tough to lobby for Boise State to be any higher. I’m not a Boise hater, it’s just the fact of the matter.

Then again, No. 1 Oregon goes on the road to USC a week from now. Stop me if you’ve seen this scenario before.

Normally, BCS/playoff arguments are like running on a treadmill, but if there was ever any reason to think a playoff was the better format, it was 2007. Week after week, No. 1 teams went down to the point where deciding who would play in the BCS national championship was as effective as pulling names out of a hat.

That’s the vibe I’m getting in 2010. If games keep going like they have been, the two best teams playing for the national title may never come to fruition.
