Randy Shannon turns down Terps coordinator job

Apparently, Randy Edsall still has some work left to do to fill out a key position on his first Maryland coaching staff.

Last Thursday, it was reported that Edsall had offered the defensive coordinator position to Randy Shannon. At the time, the former Hurricanes head coach was said to be headed back to Miami to “take care of unspecified business.”

That unspecified business, the Baltimore Sun reports today, involved speaking to representatives of his former school regarding the financial ramifications of taking the job with the Terps. Suffice to say, those ramifications were significant.

According to the Sun, Shannon would lose in the neighborhood of $1.5 million of his Miami buyout money if he were to accept the position on Edsall’s staff. As a result, Shannon has turned down the opportunity to become the Terps’ new coordinator.

It’s unclear why Shannon would lose such a significant chunk of his buyout, although the fact that the two schools are in the same conference may have something to do with the financial hit.
