Bourbon has shot at being healthy for start of Kansas’ camp

After a tweet from a teammate indicated that he had just watched Brandon Bourbon break his leg and fracture his ankle, speculation immediately commenced that the Kansas running back’s season could be impacted by the injury.

Fortunately for all involved, the injury wasn’t as severe as first feared.

Head coach Turner Gill revealed yesterday that the “lower-leg injury” Bourbon suffered will only keep the back out of action for 6-8 weeks. Such a timeline means that, barring a setback in his recovery, he should be back to full health well in advance of the start of summer camp in August.

“He’ll definitely be ready to go in the fall,” Gill said according to the Lawrence Journal World Tuesday. “It’s an unfortunate situation, but he will be fine and ready to go (this) summer, and, no doubt, he’ll be ready to go in the fall.”

As for the specific nature of the injury, the football program has yet release any details suffered during spring practice last week. The school did reveal that the redshirt freshman underwent surgery last Tuesday to repair the damage.

Bourbon did not play last season, but was listed as a four-star member of the Jayhawks’ 2010 recruiting class and was the No. 29 RB in the country according to Rivals.com.
