Cody Green, ‘Huskers confirm QB’s desire to transfer

This past Saturday, it was reported by multiple media outlets that Cody Green had requested a release from his Nebraska scholarship so they he may explore transfer opportunities.

Three days later, both sides have confirmed the reports.

In a pair of statements contained in a press release, head coach Bo Pelini and Green both acknowledged that the quarterback will indeed be transferring from the Lincoln school.

“Cody Green is a tremendous young man and we appreciate the contributions he has made to this football program,” Pelini said in his statement. “Cody feels like it is in his best interest at this time to look at other schools to continue his college career. We will support him in this process and wish him success in the future.”

“I have made the decision to look at other options in continuing my education and college football career,” Green said. “I have enjoyed my time at Nebraska and am thankful for my teammates and the opportunities the coaching staff gave me to better myself as a player and a person. The support of the fans here has been great and my time as a Husker will never be forgotten.

“The decision to leave was very difficult for me and my family. It was by far one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I talked to Coach Pelini and he has offered to assist me in finding another school to continue my playing career. I wish Coach Pelini and Nebraska nothing but the best this year and in the future.”

Green played in 17 games during his two seasons in Lincoln, starting four of those contests. He exited spring practice behind starter and redshirt sophomore Taylor Martinez (no relation) on the depth chart, and that was apparently at least part of the impetus for the decision to ask for a release. Another factor, by way of HuskerOnline‘s Sean Callahan‘s Twitter feed, was the fact that “Green didn’t feel like he was a fit in [first-year coordinator] Tim Beck‘s new offense.”

As for where Green may ultimately land, Boise State, Louisville, Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, Houston, Rice, Kansas, Kansas State and Iowa State have been mentioned as potential destinations.
