Projected nickel starter becomes latest Arizona injury casualty

And, in other breaking news, water is wet and Congress is embarrassingly dysfunctional.

Since the end of March, Arizona has lost four starters and/or key backups to likely season-ending injuries. While the fifth and latest injury is not expected to be as serious, it could cost the Wildcats a projected starter for at least the 2011 opener.

Jourdon Grandon, who had leaped to the top of the depth chart as the starting nickel defensive back since the start of summer camp, suffered a knee injury during Tuesday scrimmage and will not be available for the remainder of camp. The injury to the meniscus in on of Grandon’s knees will keep the DB sidelined for at least three weeks.

Such a timeline would put the redshirt freshman’s availability for the opener in serious jeopardy, although head coach Mike Stoops appears optimistic as far as the long-range prognosis is concerned.

“It’s not anything longterm,” he said. “We’re trying to continually adjust our secondary to get the best players on the field.”

All five of the injuries to starters/key backups were knee injuries, although the first four involved torn ACLs.
