Gary Crowton moves into non-coaching role with Maryland

Gary Crowton

Just two days after it was ann0unced that Maryland offensive coordinator Gary Crowton would not return to the team next season, we now have a reason why.

Well, sort of.

A release from the school today revealed that Crowton has taken an administrative role with the program. The terms of the new position can be for up to three months at a maximum salary of $125,000.

“We thank Gary for his service and wish him well in this new role and beyond,” coach Randy Edsall said.

Crowton was in his first year with the Terps, a job that was paying him more than $500,000 annually. He reportedly has been replaced by former New Mexico coach Mike Locksley.

Crowton had recently expressed his interest in the Colorado State job, which eventually went to Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain.

So he openly campaigned for another job. That pissed off Edsal, so he gets “transferred” internally. AND, gets a $375,000 reduction in pay as well. Makes perfect sense in College Park, MD these days I guess.

Non coaching role, huh? We’ll take him back as OC @ BC in a heartbeat! Crowton did a great job on Coughlin’s staff in early 90′s.

Croton was a disaster at LSU but Edsal is grasping at straws for the mess he has made at Maryland. Most of Maryland probably now realizes that through Ralph out was a bad idea.

Crowton was often on a different page than Coach Miles at LSU, resulting in some unimaginative play calling and an offense that ranked 100 to 120th all year, “improving” in the last two games and Cotton Bowl to 100th in the nation. An unmitigated disaster at LSU.

Coach Miles is VERY loyal to his coaching staff, even those who are pitiful. He would not fire Gary but got him an increase in pay stint at Maryland and they wanted him. Maybe if Gary went to the pros he would have much better success for alot of reasons.

I wish Crowton the best but I am very glad he is no longer with LSU.
