Ex-Northwestern RB headed to UNLV

Just two weeks after announcing he was leaving Northwestern, Adonis Smith has already found himself a new football program in which to continue his collegiate playing career.

The running back confirmed to Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune that he will be transferring to UNLV and play for the Rebels after sitting out the 2012 season. Smith told the Tribune that he chose UNLV over unnamed programs in the Pac-12 and WAC.

Smith also released a statement to the paper via email addressing his departure.

“I would like to thank all my friends, teammates, fans, faculty and coaching staff for making my stay at Northwestern a great one,” Smith wrote. “Northwestern is a great university with an outstanding community. I will always cherish my memories there and I wish everyone and the team great success in the future.”

Smith finished fourth on the team last season with 266 yards rushing and three touchdowns. During his two seasons with the Wildcats, the San Mateo, Calif., native played in 17 career games and totaled 462 rushing yards (4.3 ypc), nine receptions and three rushing TD’s.
