Amir Carlisle breaks ankle, out for spring too

Ex-USC running back Amir Carlisle will get to play in 2012 for Notre Dame, but he won’t get to practice right away.

Coach Brian Kelly announced today that Carlisle sustained a broken ankle during voluntary 7-on-7 workouts. The result of the injury means the RB will be out all of spring practice, but is expected to return by June.

It was confirmed toward the beginning of this year that Carlisle would be transferring from USC to Notre Dame in order to be closer to his father, Duane Carlisle, who was the head strength & conditioning coach of the San Francisco 49ers when his Amir signed his Letter of Intent with USC last February. However, the elder Carlisle took job at Purdue as its director of sports performance a month shortly thereafter.

Carlisle’s decision to transfer was deemed a “family” one, but the NCAA, in unusual fashion, granted Carlisle a waiver that would allow the sophomore-to-be to play for the Irish right away.

As a freshman for USC, Carlisle rushed for 118 yards, but on just 19 attempts as he was hampered by knee and, coincidentally enough, ankle injuries throughout much of the season.
