Ryan Williams heads ‘Canes quarterback battle

Due in part because of spring-ending back issue to Stephen Morris and an overall positive first impression, Memphis transfer Ryan Williams is leading the Hurricanes’ quarterback battle with just two weeks left for UM’s spring game.

The school release its updated depth chart today (Hat tip: Miami Herald) and Williams sits atop Gray Crow and Preston Dewey. Former quarterback A.J. Highsmith is now the team’s starting strong safety.

Williams sat out the 2011 season to satisfy NCAA transfer requirements.

Of course, this could all change by the time the 2012 season starts up. Morris is expected to return in time for fall camp and already has a year under his belt with some starting experience. Still, Williams has been all the buzz at Miami practices and getting first-team reps can absolutely give him a leg up on the returning Morris.
