Another starting QB ‘looks to be’ transferring from Memphis

For the fourth time in less than two years, a quarterback has apparently decided to transfer out of Memphis and ply his football wares elsewhere.

Head coach Justin Fuente confirmed to the Memphis Commercial Appeal Sunday that Taylor Reed (no relation) “looks to be” leaving the football program. Reed had battled Jacob Karam -- who, oddly enough, just transferred into the program in early January from Texas Tech -- throughout spring practice for the starting.

Those sessions ended March 31 and, while Fuente had not yet publicly declared a winner, it was thought that Karam would’ve had the edge entering summer camp.

Reed’s impending departure means the Tigers will have lost two QBs in less than three months who started games in 2011; Andy Summerlin, who started last year’s opener as well as another game later on in the season, decided to transfer in late January after Karam was added into the mix. The Tigers’ starter for the 2010 season, Ryan Williams, left the school and transferred to Miami (Fla.) in May of last year. Additionally, little-used Tyler Bass transferred in 2010.

Reed started nine games in 2011 as a true freshman, throwing for 1,690 yards and 10 touchdowns. There is no word yet on where the El Dorado, Ark., product may land next.
