Clemson extends Dabo Swinney’s contract

Back in late May, JT noted that a contract extension deal for Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was in its final stages of completion. Just a couple of weeks later, Swinney finally has the deal -- in principle -- that has been in the works for months.

The school announced in a release today a three-year extension for Swinney that will keep as head coach through 2017, which just so happens to be the length of offensive coordinator Chad Morris’ deal with the school. The terms of Swinney’s agreement include yearly compensation of $1.965 million per year plus performance incentives and escalators. Swinney’s previous deal ran through 2014 and is scheduled to pay him $1.9 million in 2012.

In all, salaries to Swinney and Morris will total roughly $3.25 million annually. Additionally, seven of Swinney’s assistants received raises totaling $450,00 earlier this year, with 60 percent of that money coming from Swinney himself through a clause in his contract.

“This contract reaffirms our commitment to Coach Swinney and his staff,” said Clemson Board of Trustees Chairman David Wilkins. “We look forward to our football program winning many more ACC Championships under his direction.”

“This shows a great commitment on the part of David Wilkins and the Board of Trustees, President Jim Barker and Terry Don Phillips,” said Swinney. “I am very appreciative of their confidence in the program and my staff.”

Clemson finished 10-4 last season with an appearance in the Orange Bowl, the school’s first in three decades.
