TCU confirms Randy Shannon’s hiring

Rumored to be in the works for the past couple of weeks, TCU has official confirmed the addition of a veteran defensive coach to Gary Paterson‘s staff.

In a release, the Horned Frogs announced that, as expected, Randy Shannon has been hired as Patterson’s new linebackers coach. Shannon will replace Tony Tedemy, who abruptly resigned earlier this month.

Shannon did not coach last season, instead serving as an ESPN college football analyst.

From 2007-10, Shannon was the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes. He was fired in late November of 2010, and subsequently sued the university for breach of contract. The two sides ultimately settled the suit this past June.

Shannon has been linked to both head-coaching vacancies -- Arizona, Vanderbilt and Minnesota among others -- as well as to assistant openings at Texas, Maryland and UCLA since his departure from his alma mater.

Prior to his time as the Canes’ head coach, he was defensive coordinator at the school for six years (2001-06) and held the title of linebackers coach for a total of six years (1993-97; 2006) as well.
